The Indian peafowl is a large and brightly coloured bird native to South Asia, the massively popular bird has been introduced into lots of other parts of the world. The male or "Peacock" is the strikingly coloured of the pair. It has a blue body and a fan-like tail which is covered with colourful feathers which each carry an eyespot, as you can see in the photo. The bird is widely celebrated in Hindu and Greek mythology and is the national bird of India.
In Greek mythology, the peacock was created by the god Hera, he created the bird from Argus who has 100 eyes. The feathers on the fail symbolise the "vault of heaven", and the eyes of the stars. This represents all-seeing knowledge. In Bhiddist philosophy, the peacock is a representative of wisdom. the feathers have also been known to be used in rituals. In Christianity, the peacock symbolises resurrection and immortality.
