The Old World Swallowtail belongs to the Papilionidae family of butterflies. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail. The species was named by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th addition of Systema Naturae in 1758
Its wingspan reaches 6–8 centimetres (2.6–3.4 in).
