The Deaths Head Hawk Moth belongs to the Acherontia family of moths. These moths are easily distinguishable by the vaguely human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax. The skull-like pattern and its fanciful associations with the supernatural and evil have fostered superstitious fears of the species. The species name Atropos is from Greek myth and related to death
Its wingspan reaches 10–12 centimetres (3.9–5.1 in).
